Warren E. Burger
Warren Earl Burger (born September 17, 1907 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , † June 25, 1995 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and the 15th Chief Justice of the United States . He led the Supreme Court to succeed Earl Warren 1969-1986; previously he was a judge on the federal appeals court for the Washington DC District Court. During his tenure, important decisions were made on issues of abortion ( Roe v. Wade ), the death penalty and equality . His successor was William H. Rehnquist . His final resting place is Arlington National Cemetery .
The American Philosophical Society awarded him their Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Public Service in 1988 .
