Michael Peart

Michael A. Peart (* 1948 in London ) is a Jamaican politician of the People's National Party (PNP), who was speaker and thus President of the House of Representatives of Jamaica from 2002 to 2007 and has held this office again since 2012.

Life

Engineer, MP and Minister of State

Peart is the son of Ernest Peart , who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and later served as a representative of the PNP in the House of Representatives for the Manchester West constituency and Jamaica's High Commissioner in Great Britain between September 1978 and August 1981 . In 1950 the family returned to Jamaica and he graduated from Manchester High School with a degree in electrical engineering . He then worked as an electrical engineer for the Alcan Jamaica Company and as an electrical engineering consultant.

He began his political career in the Youth Association of the People's National Party (PNP) and later became a member of the National Committee of the PNP and party chairman of the PNP in region 5. In addition, Peart, who was chairman of the advisory board of Manchester High School , is an officer for the Jamaican Football Association as founder of Park Rangers Football Club , President of (Manchester Football Association) and representative of Manchester Parish in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).

On March 30, 1993, Peart was elected as a candidate for the PNP for the first time to the House of Representatives and has since represented the interests of the Manchester Southern constituency . As a Member of Parliament, he served as a member of the International Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Nations Parliamentary Assembly ( CPA ) and was temporarily Chairman of the CPA for the Caribbean, America and Atlantic regions.

On December 18, 1997, Peart was initially Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, before he subsequently served as Minister of State in the Treasury with responsibility for the civil service during the tenure of Prime Minister Percival J. Patterson .

Speaker of the House of Representatives

In November 2002 he was appointed as successor to Violet Neilson first speaker (Speaker) and President of the House of Representatives of Jamaica. He held this office until his replacement by Delroy Chuck on September 27, 2007 after the election victory of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) on September 3, 2007. After he excluded the press from a meeting of the House of Representatives in October 2006, protests broke out by media representatives such as Desmond Richards, President of the Jamaica Press Association PAJ (Press Association of Jamaica) .

On January 17, 2012, Peart was again Speaker of the House of Representatives after the PNP's election victory on December 29, 2011 as the successor to Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert . As Speaker of Parliament Chairman is also the Committees on Rules of Procedure (Standing Order Committee ) for privileges (Privileges Committee) , for constituency boundaries (Constituency Boundaries Committee) and ethics (Ethics Committee) .

On August 29, 2013, Peart stated that he would not run again in the next election.

Peart's younger brother, Dean Peart, was also a long-time member of the House of Representatives for the constituency of Manchester North West as a representative of the PNP, as well as a temporary Minister of Local Government and Community Development .
