Michael Schernack

Michael Schernack (also Scharnack, Schernaccius ; born February 17, 1622 in Treuenbrietzen , † February 7, 1675 in Wittenberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian and songwriter.

Life

He was born on February 17, 1622 in Treuenbrietzen as the son of the local superintendent Andreas Schernack and Sabine Lüssow. He attended schools in Wittenberg, Berlin , Ruppin and Lüneburg . Studied theology in Rostock , Wittenberg and Leipzig . When he returned to Wittenberg, on April 26, 1652, he acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy and held private lectures there on theological and philosophical subjects to instruct the students. On September 15, 1661 he became a substitute for the archdeacon August Fleischhauer at the Wittenberg town church , in 1670 fourth deacon there, was also adjunct of the philosophical faculty and died on February 7, 1675.

His tombstone contained the following inscription:

“DOMS et M. Michaëli Schernaccio viro de ecclesia hac meritissimo, diacono fidelissimo, qui, natus cI כּ I כּ cXXII d. XVII. Febr. Fidae Brizae in vicina Marchia, postquam in vita tota et per XV quasi annos in officio suo Deo fidem patientiam et constantiam, in matrimonio cum Margaretha Elisabetha Fleischhaueriana, ex qua Michaëlem Andream, et cum Johanna Regina Elstia, ex qua Johannem Bartholomaeum Martinum et Manassem et Jobum Ephraimum (qui a letere parentis situs est) suscepit, utrique conjugi amorem infucatum, auditoribus suis et omnibus integritatem et innocentiam suam approbasset, satis plenus dei spei et placide in Jesu suo d. Schernack was married to Margarete Elisabeth on April 29, 1662 (* August 22, 1645 in Wittenberg, baptized August 24, 1645, † January 12, 1664 there (died in childbed, was buried in the church cemetery next to her siblings), born January 17, 1664), the daughter of the Wittenberg archdeacon August Fleischhauer.
