Michael Schugalté

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Schugalté (born February 20, 1890 in Odessa , Russia , † April 14, 1954 in Knokke , Belgium ) was a Russian-Jewish violinist, band leader and composer.

Live and act

Michael Schugalté was born in Odessa in 1890 as Moses Schuchhalter (or, because there is no h-loud in Russian, Moses Schu-g-old (r)). He studied violin playing and then directed a small band. At the end of the 1920s he came to Berlin. In 1932 he came second - after his violinist colleague Barnabás von Géczy and his orchestra - in the competition for the “Blue Violin”, which the newspaper “ Acht Uhr-Abendblatt ” in Berlin had proclaimed among the leading entertainment orchestras .

Schugalté took pictures on Lindström's GLORIA label. His repertoire included dance and hit compositions, but his specialty was Eastern European folk music. Potpourris with Romanian or Hungarian "national melodies" appeared there. Schugalté was of Jewish descent. In 1935 he was excluded from the Reich Chamber of Music and was no longer allowed to play in Germany, which was ruled by the Nazis. His orchestra was taken over by the German pianist and composer Jo Knümann (1895–1952). He himself went to Belgium.

At the end of the Second World War, Schugalté stayed in Brussels , where he continued to make music in the "Ancienne Belgique" event hall in the way he did in Berlin. He died on April 14, 1954 in Knokke, Belgium.
