Michael Scott (Manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Scott (born February 11, 1943 ) is an American physicist and was Apple's CEO from February 1977 to March 1981 .

Scott was with Fairchild Semiconductor from 1967 and after five years went to National Semiconductor , where he finally managed production (Production Line Manager). In 1977, Apple investor and head of marketing at Apple (and Apple's No. 3 employee) Mike Markkula brought him to Apple as CEO because he did not trust founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak to manage the company. Markkula knew Scott from their time at Fairchild Semiconductor. Scott was employee number 5 (but gave himself number 7 in reminiscence of the number of James Bond) and should take care of the production of the Apple II. One of his measures at Apple is said to have been that he banned the use of typewriters at Apple. After Scott arbitrarily fired around 50 Apple employees (of around 1500) shortly after the IPO in 1981 (he thought they were superfluous), including half of the Apple II developers ( called Black Wednesday in Apple history ), he had to leave the company and was replaced by Markkula himself. For the time being he remained Vice Chairman of the Board of Management, but resigned in July 1981. 1983 to 1988 he headed the Starstruck company, which pursued rocket launches at sea for satellites.

He built up an extensive collection of colored gemstones and is himself an expert in gemology . In particular, he examines their colors in his own well-equipped laboratory. He also sponsors the Rruff project for the acquisition of spectral data for gemstones and minerals. He himself published a book about it and worked on a small, handy device that recognizes gemstones in the field based on spectral data (based on a model in Star Trek). He works with the University of Arizona and Lyon.

A mineral (Scottyite after the nickname Scotty by Michael Scott) is named after him, a blue barium copper silicate found in South Africa and Rhineland Palatinate.
