The Snelbinder is a two kilometer long cycle traffic facility in the Dutch province of Gelderland , which is designed as an elevated road reserved for pedestrians and cyclists . In Nijmegen it crosses the Waal river (mouth of the Rhine at kilometer 884 ) at the parallel Nijmegen railway bridge , to which an additional truss was attached to the east side of the main bridge. The cycle path runs parallel to the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line and connects the city center of Nijmegen with the town of Lent in the Nijmegen-Noord district .

history

prehistory

In 2001, the Fietsersbond criticized the urban cycling network and thus suggested a better connection for cyclists in Nijmegen. As a result, the municipality of Nijmegen initiated a project aimed at promoting the expansion of the bicycle infrastructure by 2012. Then the first plans for a bicycle bridge over the Waal were made. It should enable cyclists to get from the city center to the new Nijmegen-Noord district more quickly. So far, a detour via the Waal bridge to the east had been necessary.

planning

During the development phase , those responsible, including the architect Paul van der Ree of the Movares engineering office and those involved in the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed , considered how to deal with the preservation of monuments . At the southern end of the railway bridge are two bridge towers from the 19th century, the remains of an earlier bridge construction and have been listed as a Rijksmonument since November 11, 1986 . Therefore, it was decided to lead the bike path through the eastern tower.

construction

The individual parts of the bridge construction were first assembled on the north bank of the Waal. On March 20, 2004, four floating cranes swam into the structure and attached it to the railway bridge. During the entire construction project, the train traffic and shipping had to be stopped. The official opening took place on April 15, 2004 by Transport Minister Karla Peijs and Mayor Guusje ter Horst .

Current situation

Since the inauguration of the RijnWaalpad expressway on 3 July 2015, cyclists have been led from Nijmegen train station via the Snelbinder to Arnhem .
