Lent is a place in the north of the municipality of Nijmegen in the Dutch province of Gelderland . The formerly independent municipality has belonged to the municipality of Nijmegen since a border correction in 1998, after having been part of the municipality of Elst for 180 years .

geography

In the south, Lent is separated from the city center of Nijmegen by the river Waal . Between 2012 and 2015 a new branch under the name Spiegelwaal was built as the centerpiece of the Ruimte voor de Waal project . This is part of the national program Ruimte voor de Rivier der Rijkswaterstaat . During the construction period, the dike, which originally protected the land north of the Waal, was relocated by 350 meters and the Waal bridge , the railway bridge and De Oversteek were lengthened and additional car and pedestrian bridges were built. The side arm extends over a length of four kilometers.

history

In the vicinity of the P + R parking lot on the N325 , traces of settlement could be found that can be dated back to the Neolithic and Mesolithic .

Former casemate near the railway bridge over the Waal

Before Lent was incorporated into Elst on January 1, 1818 , it had formed an independent municipality . In 1879 the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line was opened, on which the Nijmegen Lent station is located.

When German shock troops advanced over the south to Nijmegen in May 1940 during the Second World War , Dutch troops blew up the Waal Bridge and the railway bridge south of Lent . In the meantime the Dutch had positioned themselves near Lent and shot at the Germans, who had taken position southeast of the Waal Bridge, from bunkers. However, the Dutch were inferior to the German soldiers and had to flee. In the further course of the Second World War, Lent was the focus again: During Operation Market Garden , around 260 American paratroopers crossed the Waal to Lent in 26 folding boats . Half of the soldiers were killed or wounded in a four-hour battle. In the end, the American troops and the 30th British Corps were able to take the bridges over the Waal, which had been rebuilt after they were blown up in 1940.

During the Cold War, the Netherlands feared an invasion of the Soviet Union . Therefore, the so-called IJssel line was built between Kampen and Nijmegen, which should protect the Dutch cities in the Randstad . The damming of the Nederrijn and Waal was intended to divert the water into the IJssel and thus form a natural line of defense. Since the entire Betuwe area would be flooded if the Betuwse Bandijk broke , an eleven kilometer long dike was built between Arnhem and Nijmegen, which ran along the N325. When the IJssel line was closed in 1964, the dike near Lent was dismantled and the sand used in the construction was sold. Parts of the former sleeping dike can still be seen at Lent and Elden today.

In the 1990s , plans arose for the development of a new VINEX residential district in the north of Nijmegen. Therefore, between 1996 and 1998, 1367 hectares of land were given to Nijmegen by the municipalities of Bemmel , Elst and Valburg. Lent, which was incorporated into Nijmegen on January 1, 1998, was also in this area. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Waalsprong residential area took place on January 19, 1998 .

Road traffic

Lent is connected to the city center of Nijmegen and the surrounding area via two road bridges, the Waalbrücke and De Oversteek . Provinciale Weg 325 , which connects Arnhem with Nijmegen and from there continues to the German border at Beek , runs through the village . Of the nine Stadsroutes in Nijmegen , three run through Lent, including the S100 , S110 and S111 .

Rail transport

Nijmegen Lent train station

The Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line can be reached via Nijmegen Lent station. The current station building was put into operation in July 2013. A bicycle station is to be built in the parking garage of the nearby Van der Valk Hotel , as the parking facilities at the train station are often targeted by bicycle thieves.
