Michael Mick David Slater (born July 8, 1958 in Brisbane , Australia ) is an Australian Major General who has been retired since 2015.

Career

Slater was born to Harold Leslie Slater and Shirly Florence (nee Butler). Michael Slater received his first education at Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace. Slater studied at the Queensland University of Technology before joining the Australian Army in 1978 . Here he graduated from the Officer Cadet School in Portsea . In the United States , Slater received training in mobilization planning and graduated from both the United States of America and the Australian Army Command and Staff College at Fort Queenscliff . He has a Masters degree in Strategic Studies and Business Administration .

Slater served as platoon commander in the 8th and 9th centuries. Battalion and 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and later as an intelligence officer, company commander and operations officer in the 2nd / 4th Battalion. He then went to the Infantry School and the Combined Arms School in Canada .

During Operation Pollard (February 15, 1998 - October 1, 2001) Slater served intermittently as an Operations staff officer at the headquarters of the Third US Army in Kuwait . He commanded the 2nd Battalion (1999–2000) and the 3rd Brigade (2004–2006) with the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET) deployed during the East Timor crisis in 1999 . For this, Slater received the Distinguished Service Cross on March 25, 2000 . From May 25 to October 2006 he commanded the International Stabilization Force (ISF) with the rank of brigadier general , which was sent to the neighboring country to stabilize again after the unrest in East Timor in 2006 .

On the General Staff, Slater worked as Director General Preparedness and Plans , Director General Intelligence Support to Operations and Head of the Defense Personnel Executive . He also worked as an investigative officer for the Australian Military Justice.

In January 2011, Slater led the Flood Recovery Taskforce after the Queensland floods in 2010/2011 . The task force was later transformed into the Queensland Reconstruction Authority . On August 31, 2011, Slater relinquished responsibility. For his services, Slater received the Order of Australia with the rank of officer.

Slater eventually served as Commander Forces Command from 2011 to 2015 until he retired.

Michael Slater has been married to Danielle Lisa Morris for the second time since 2000 and has three grown children, two sons and a daughter from his first marriage.
