Michael Steiner (economist)

Michael Steiner (born July 3, 1951 in Bruck an der Mur , Styria ) is an Austrian economist. Since 1997 he has been a university professor at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz .

Life

Steiner graduated from elementary school and secondary school in his hometown and visited Bruck 1967-1968 as a fellow of the American Field Service , the Marquette High School in Alton, Illinois . He studied law at the University of Graz from 1970–1974, as well as social and economic sciences from 1971–1977, and obtained a doctorate in law in 1974 and a doctorate in social and economic sciences at the University of Graz in 1984. In 1989 Steiner's habilitation took place at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Graz.

Steiner has been working at the Institute for Economics and Economic Policy at the University of Graz since 1977 , initially as a university assistant, since 1989 as an assistant professor, and since 1997 as an associate professor (tit.aO). In addition, Steiner was head of the Institute for Technology and Regional Policy at Joanneum Research in Graz from 1991 to 06/2010 . Since 2011 he has been managing director of Steiner + Partner Wirtschaftsanalysen GmbH.

His main research interests are centered on regional economics, Steiner's teaching activities deal primarily with the topics of macroeconomics / economic policy, European integration, regional economics, technological change and technology policy, industrial economics and public finance.

Steiner was visiting professor at the Universities of Pécs (1996) and Klagenfurt (1991–1995) and Visiting Fellow at the Universities of Canterbury (1982–1983) and Glasgow (1986) and Bocconi / Milan (1991). He is an employee or member of numerous research groups and scientific associations, especially with regard to regional research and a permanent referee for scientific journals. Steiner has also been the editor of the cultural-political journal WAS since 1978 . His voluntary activities include the coordination of the Salzburger Kreis at Kapitelplatz 2 (SKK2, formerly Seggenberger Kreis and St. Georgener Kreis, since 1992), membership in the Board of Trustees of Caritas Graz-Seckau (2009-2016), and the deputy chairmanship of the diocese's unemployment fund Graz-Seckau (1995-2015)
