What (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WAS is an Austrian magazine in book form on contemporary issues that has been published since 1972 .

In its beginnings it was just a program magazine with a cultural calendar from the Graz Forum Stadtpark . The editor at the time, Gerfried Sperl, expanded the subject area covered into politics and soon took over the editorial office, in which Michael Steiner had supplemented him since 1978 and reinforced the role of economics in the paper. As an independent magazine, it adhered to Jandl's motto "confusing" "lechts" and "rinks" and endeavored to be open in thematic and spatial terms.

The topics changed over years and decades, but discussed and questioned new developments in politics, society and religion. The quarterly appearance for a long time changed to a one-year mode in the new millennium with a broadening of the topics. Issues of the present are dealt with from different perspectives - with topics on this side of real utopia, beyond the unreal zeitgeist such as “presumption of innocence”, “beautiful failure”, “on the run”, “again conservative”.
