Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell (born November 11, 1952 in Killing , Kapelln municipality , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian bank director.

Life

Gertrude Gugerell studied economics in Vienna . Since 1975 she worked at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank . From 1981 to 1984 she was economic policy advisor to Finance Minister Herbert Salcher . Since 1997 Gugerell has been a member of the board of directors of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and from 1998 Vice-Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and the International Monetary Fund . From 2003 to May 2011 she was a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank . She has been on the Commerzbank Supervisory Board since June 1, 2012 .

In the wake of the BAWAG affair , she was accused of having, at Helmut Elsner's request, in her function as the board member responsible for banking supervision at the Austrian National Bank, glossed over the true extent of the debt in order to prevent a more in-depth examination by the financial market regulator. However, this allegation could not be confirmed. However, in this context, the chairman of the banking investigation committee announced a complaint in the media because of false testimony, but was then postponed because Tumpel-Gugerell wanted to be heard again.

Until the beginning of 2018 she was a member of the supervisory board of ÖBB-Holding AG .

She was married to the former President of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labor Herbert Tumpel until his death in October 2018 .
