Herbert Tumpel (born March 9, 1948 in Vienna ; † October 4, 2018 ) was an Austrian economist and Chamber of Labor official. From 1997 to 2013 he was President of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Vienna (AK Vienna) and the Federal Chamber of Labor (BAK).

Life

Herbert Tumpel attended the Higher Federal Training and Research Institute for the Textile Industry (1962–1967) and subsequently served as a soldier in the Armed Forces Hunting Command . After studying economics at the University of Vienna (1973), he worked in the economics department of the ÖGB (1973–1983). From 1983 to 1987 he was head of the economics department of the ÖGB and chief secretary of the ÖGB from 1987 to 1997.

In addition, from 1987 to 1997 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BAWAG . Günter Weninger succeeded him in this position .

Under Tumpel, the services of the chambers of labor were brought even closer to the needs of the members. With the “AK plus” program, the range of services has been expanded and optimized, for example in labor and social law or consumer protection. In the course of the ÖGB-BAWAG scandal that came to light in 2006 , Tumpel came under great pressure because, in his role as President of the BAWAG Supervisory Board , he had approved the resumption of Caribbean business from 1995, which was almost banned by Finance Minister Ferdinand Lacina in 1994 . Tumpel himself always rejected responsibility for business in the Caribbean. Not the supervisory board, but the executive board was responsible for the operational assessment.

On August 26, 2012, he announced that he would no longer stand in the 2014 Chamber of Labor elections for reasons of age.

Herbert Tumpel was married to Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell until his death .
