Günter Weninger

Günter Weninger (* 27. August 1940 in Wiener Neustadt , † 4. April 2016 ) was an Austrian OGB - union official . He belonged to the SPÖ .

Youth and education

From 1955 to 1960 he completed an apprenticeship as an electrician. From 1960 to 1962 he worked as a health inspector for the NÖGKK . In 1969 he made up his Matura and then studied economics .

Career in union youth

From 1962 to 1963 he was youth secretary of the ÖGB. From 1964 to 1974 regional youth chairman of the ÖGB Lower Austria . From 1966 to 1974 he was also a member of the ÖGB youth council.

Career in the union

From 1986 to 2006 was on the presidium of the ÖGB. From 1991 to 2003 he was chairman of the union of community workers and vice-president of the ÖGB. From 1997 onwards he was responsible for finance and supervisory board chairman of BAWAG as successor to Herbert Tumpel .

BAWAG affair

The BAWAG affair fell during his term of office as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BAWAG . He approved the exorbitantly high fees for Helmut Elsner and secretly pledged the assets of the ÖGB with Fritz Verzetnitsch in 2000 to cover BAWAG losses. To do this and to camouflage the participation of the ÖGB in the American broker Refco , he founded various foundations such as Dessana in Liechtenstein .

In the first Bawag trial on July 7, 2008, he was not finally sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment (including two years conditional). The judgment was overturned by the Supreme Court in December 2010 and referred back to the first instance for renegotiation. In the second Bawag trial, on December 18, 2012, the accusation of infidelity was finally acquitted. Weninger was sentenced to a conditional imprisonment of 1 month for accounting offenses at the ÖGB; the judgment is final.
