Gerfried Sperl

Gerfried Sperl (* 1941 in Oberzeiring , Styria ) is an Austrian journalist . Together with Oscar Bronner , he was editor-in-chief of the Austrian daily Der Standard until July 1, 2007 .

Life

Sperl is the son of a notary and the daughter of an innkeeper. He attended the grammar school in Bruck an der Mur and studied German, English and philosophy at the University of Graz . While on a scholarship in the USA he took courses with Louis Fischer ("The Life of Gandhi" 1950, "The Life of Lenin" 1964) at Georgetown University in Washington DC in the fall of 1965

At the University of Graz he joined the Catholic University Youth and was involved in the student council from 1960. As a mandate of the bourgeois “election bloc” he was chairman of the student council from autumn 1963 to summer 1965. In June of this year he founded the left-wing liberal student group AKTION with the later Graz city councilor Helmut Strobl, which also appeared throughout Austria until 1969.

From 1969 to 1982 he worked for the " Kleine Zeitung ". He then moved to the ÖVP newspaper Südost Tagespost as editor-in- chief , which enjoyed limited independence through an editorial statute. After they were hired in the spring of 1987, he went on as deputy. Editor-in-chief for the “Kurier” in Vienna. In the same function, he was part of the main editorial team of Oscar Bronner's “Der Standard” from 1988. From 1992 to 2007 he was managing editor-in-chief. Bronner took up his suggestion to entrust Alexandra Föderl-Schmid with the successor.

From 1978 to 2008 Sperl (with the economist Michael Steiner ) published the magazine WAS , from 2010 to 2014 the quarterly magazine PHOENIX. A series of books has been published under this logo by Czernin-Verlag in Vienna since 2015.

Sperl is vehemently committed to modern architecture. He has moderated the serial symposium “The Future of Living” more than 50 times. He also acted as a client - with buildings by the architects Klaus Kada , Ernst Giselbrecht and Adolf Krischanitz .

In 2007 Sperl was awarded the Kurt Vorhofer Prize .

Since July 2017 he has been writing columns for the weekly magazine News .
