Alexandra Föderl-Schmid (* 30 January 1971 in Haslach , Upper Austria as Alexandra Schmid ) is an Austrian journalist . From 2007 to 2017 she was editor-in-chief and since 2012 also co-editor of the daily newspaper Der Standard . She has been the correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Israel since 2017 and a member of the editor-in-chief since 2020.

life and career

Alexandra Schmid grew up in Klaffer in the Mühlviertel and graduated from high school in Rohrbach from 1981 to 1989 . Already during her school days she wrote articles for the Mühlviertler Nachrichten (today Oberösterreichische Rundschau ) and the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten .

Schmid studied journalism , political science and history at the University of Salzburg . She wrote her first article for the Standard in June 1990 as a domestic policy journalist in Linz . She wrote a diploma thesis entitled Journalism is in reality a man's job, which dealt with the labor market in the media sector in Upper Austria.

In 1993 Schmid married Markus Föderl ‑ Höbenreich, then editor-in-chief of the German news channel n-tv .

From 1993 to 2004, Föderl-Schmid was the correspondent for Standard in Berlin. In 1996 she completed her dissertation on From Monopoly to Market: Ten Years of the Dual Broadcasting System in Germany . In 2003 she became deputy chairwoman and in 2004, as the first woman, chairwoman of the Association of Foreign Press in Germany.

In 2005 Föderl-Schmid completed a three-month study visit to the Green College of Oxford University as part of the Alfred Geiringer Scholarship awarded by the Austria Press Agency . From April 2005 to March 2006, Föderl-Schmid was Brussels correspondent for Standard , before moving to Vienna as head of the economic department . In July 2007 she became the first woman editor-in-chief of an Austrian daily newspaper at Standard . Between 2007 and 2013 she also worked as an author and reviewer of political and historical books for the Europäische Rundschau .

Between 2008 and 2017 she was the first moderator of the series Europe in Discourse in the Vienna Burgtheater . From 2008 to 2014 Föderl-Schmid was a board member of the Vienna-based International Press Institute and from 2010 to 2012 a member of the UNESCO jury, which awards the annual freedom of the press. In October 2012 Föderl-Schmid became co-editor of the Standard . After merging the print and online divisions in July 2013, she headed the joint editorial team. In the 2013 summer semester, she held the Theodor Herzl Lecturer in Poetics of Journalism at the University of Vienna . Since 2017 she has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in Oxford, which, among other things , publishes the Digital News Report every year .

At the end of August 2017, Föderl-Schmid stopped working for Standard . From the beginning of November 2017 to June 30, 2020 she was a correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Israel. Since July 15, 2020 she has been Deputy Editor-in-Chief there. Föderl-Schmid was frequent participant in the ORF telecast Pressestunde and until 2017 regular interviewer in the Ö1 telecast Talking .
