Michael Türkay

Michael Türkay (born April 3, 1948 in Frankfurt am Main ; † September 9, 2015 there ) was a German zoologist and marine researcher .

Life

Türkay studied biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main until he graduated in 1973. In 1983 he received his doctorate there with the work Morphological-Taxonomic Monograph of the Gecarcinidae . After his habilitation , he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Frankfurt for the specialist areas of special zoology and morphology of invertebrates .

As a schoolboy, Türkay became a member of the Senckenberg Natural Research Society. From 1964 to 1974 he worked as a freelancer and from 1974 to 1976 as an assistant in the crustacean section of the Senckenberg Research Institute. Since 1967 he has carried out scientific work on decapod crustaceans and published relevant publications. Since 1976 he has headed the institute's crustacean section as a research assistant and has described several new types of cancer.

From 1989 to 2014 he was department head zoology II (today department marine zoology) at the Senckenberg Research Institute , from 1997 to 2007 he was the director's deputy in the field of research, human resources and finance. In 2002 he took over the research management. From 2007 until his retirement in 2013 he was a member of the board of directors of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung SGN and deputy director general. For many years he was the head of the Senckenberg School, which trains scientific assistants for natural history museums.

He became known for his North Sea research and his expeditions with the science ship Meteor to explore the deep sea in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Together with Eckart Witzigmann and Christian Teubner, he wrote cookbooks on mussels, shrimp and fish.
