Michael Thornhill
Michael Thornhill (born January 26, 1931 in Croydon , † 2018 in Huddersfield ) was an English table tennis player . In the 1950s he took part in five world championships .
Career
Michael Thornhill was mainly a defender, but knew how to switch to attack again and again. He was the English junior champion in 1948. For the first time internationally among adults, he appeared in an international match against the USA in March 1950. In total, he won more than 50 titles in open international tournaments. In the 1959/60 season he was in doubles with Johnny Leach in both the national English championships and the English Open first. At the 1951 World Cup , he came fourth with the English team.
In addition to table tennis, Michael Thornhill also played cricket and hockey. When the Swaythling Club International was founded in 1967 , he was one of the founding members.
Michael Thornhill died in 2018 after a long illness.
