Michael Tonsor

Michael Tonsor , actually Michel Scherer (* around 1540/1546 in Ingolstadt ; † around 1605/1607 there) was a German composer , conductor , choirmaster , organist , music teacher and singer .

Along with Giovanni Gabrieli , Johannes Eccard and Leonhard Lechner, he was an important student of Orlando di Lasso . From around 1567 to 1588 he worked as an organist at St. George's Church in Dinkelsbühl .

He created a number of sacred chants and motets as well as a Missa solemnis , many of his compositions have only survived in handwriting. In 1570 15 of his sacred songs with the title Selectae quaedam cantiones sacrae, modis musicis quinque vocum recens compositae per Michaelem Tonsorem were published in Nuremberg . Michael Tonsor's composition Maria zart, gemehret ward is available on sound carriers.
