Johannes Eccard
Johannes Eccard (* 1553 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ; † autumn 1611 in Berlin ) was a German composer and conductor .
Life
As a choirboy, Johannes Eccard was a member of the court orchestra in Weimar . As a student of Ludwig Helmbold and Joachim a Burck, he worked briefly as a singer under Orlando di Lasso in Munich and made a study trip to Venice from there . There he visited Andrea Gabrieli , Claudio Merulo and Gioseffo Zarlino, among others . After a short stay in his hometown Mühlhausen (1573/74) he was appointed organist in Augsburg by Jakob Fugger .
In 1579 he moved to Königsberg in the service of Margrave Georg Friedrich von Ansbach , who hired him for his court orchestra. Here he was initially assistant to Teodoro Riccio , who was vice- conductor in 1580. Six years later, Eccard succeeded Riccio, but it was not until 1604 that he was officially appointed Kapellmeister. In 1608 he accepted a call as electoral conductor and cathedral choirmaster at the court in Berlin .
He created around 250 sacred and secular polyphonic songs, often setting texts by Ludwig Helmbold to music. His collection of Preussische Festlieder was published in two parts by Johann Stobäus in Elbing in 1642 and 1644 . Other works, including several masses , have been preserved in handwriting.
