Joachim a Burck

Joachim a Burck (* 1546 in Burg ; † May 24, 1610 in Mühlhausen ; also: Joachim von Burgk , actually Joachim Moller ) was a German composer .

Life

Burck probably received his musical training in Magdeburg . He matriculated on April 11, 1561 at the University of Wittenberg and in 1563 became cantor at the Latin school and in 1566 organist at the Divi Blasii church in Mühlhausen. In the free imperial city he established the important musical culture associated with the names Johann Rudolph Ahle , Johann Eccard , Johann Georg Ahle and Johann Sebastian Bach . In addition, he worked as a historian and public notary. In 1583 he was appointed senator and after his death his complete works were published on the basis of a resolution of the council. In his hometown Burg, a street is named after him (with the spelling Joachim-a-Burgk).

Burck is considered to be the pioneer of Protestant church music in the 17th century. In addition to Latin compositions such as motets , odes , officies , hymns and a passion , his German-language works should be mentioned here: a St. John Passion , in which the German Passion text was composed for the first time with several voices, a Passion on a Gospel harmony and Dreyssig Spiritual Songs for the festival through Year and German Christian songs . Johann Sebastian Bach used his chorale Es Stand'n Before God's Throne in BWV 309.
