Michael Wälchli (born February 15, 1982 ) is a former Swiss volleyball player. Between 2001 and 2008 he was active as a volleyball player for the clubs Volley Amriswil , CS Chênois VB and Lausanne UC as well as the Swiss national team . A move to Volley Näfels failed in 2005 due to the transfer fee. Since 2018 he has been the technical managing director of Aluminum Norf GmbH in Neuss .
Volleyball career
Club career
Having grown up in the small town of Amriswil, Michael Wälchli made his debut in the Swiss National League A at the age of 18 and became a regular player one year later (2001). With Amriswil he reached the Swiss Cup final four times, won three bronze medals in the championship and in 2006 reached the club's first play-off final. After a season in Geneva with Chênois, Wälchli moved to Lausanne in 2007. In 2008 he won the Swiss Cup with Lausanne UC in the playoff final against his regular club Amriswil . Lausanne. A 3-0 deficit in the seventh game of the final series was turned into a 4-3 win.
National team
In 2001, Wälchli made his first appearance for the Swiss national team and was also a regular player. In 2005 he took part in the Universiade in Izmir for Switzerland. With the national team, he was also involved in major successes such as the victory against Russia at the Universiade or the one against France in May 2006. In May 2008, Wälchli played against Sweden for the last time for Switzerland and then announced his retirement from the national team and from top-class sport.
Others
Wälchli won the only two Best Libero awards at the Swiss Volley Awards in 2005 and 2006. He was also nominated for the best Swiss player in 2008. He was also allowed to take part in all Swiss Allstar games during his active time. In 2012 he appeared again as a student at the University of Cambridge in the prestigious Varsity game against Oxford, where he led the Cambridge Light Blue to a 3-2 win over Oxford.
Michael Wälchli has also participated in four youth and student European championships in beach volleyball. The best result was a 5th place in 2004.
Professional career
After retiring as a volleyball player in 2008, Michael Wälchli worked for the management consultancy McKinsey & Company for several years . In 2015 he then switched to Novelis , the world's leading aluminum recycler and rolled product manufacturer, where he soon took over the sites in the Sauerland as plant manager. Wälchli has been the technical managing director of Aluminum Norf GmbH since 2018 and is particularly responsible for the modernization of the company, especially in light of the energy transition.
Michael Wälchli is also involved in various NGOs and was, among other things, CEO of Aiducation International UK
