The cemetery chapel in Iphofen

The St. Michael Chapel in Iphofen is a chapel in the old town of the town. It stands next to the parish church of St. Vitus . The city's ossuary is located under the church .

history

Ossuary (also called charnel house and ossuary) were built when graves were re-filled. The bones that were previously in the grave were placed in the ossuaries.

The Iphöfer ossuary was first mentioned in 1380. In 1690 it lost its actual function, because the cemetery around the town church of St. Vitus was relocated and no further transfer of bones took place. The ossuary degenerated into a beet cellar. The lack of a lock on the building led to devastation. In 1960 the ossuary was cleared out and the bones sunk in a pit on the outskirts. In 1998 the Karner was set up again.

The chapel, built at the same time as the ossuary, received a benefit in 1415 . The pastor of the town church received the right of patronage. In 1670 the building was profaned after hardly any church activities had been carried out there before. It was not until 2005 that the church was consecrated and opened to the public. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation runs the chapel under monument number D-6-75-139-53.
