The town church of St. Vitus

The parish church of St. Vitus is the largest church in Iphofen . It is located in the old town on Kirchplatz in the north of the city.

history

In 1293 a chapel was mentioned on the site of the present church. It was owned by the Counts of Castell . In 1303 the term "ecclesia" (Eng. Church) appeared for the building for the first time. In 1349 the church was first referred to as the parish church . During this time construction work was carried out on the church. The building was consecrated to Saints Vitus , Nikolaus, Jodocus , Helena, Barbara , the Holy Virgin and the Cross.

The year 1457 brought changes to the church. The ownership passed to the city of Iphofen. Previously, in 1414, the choir was given its current appearance. The characteristic tower was built. In 1465 the city undertook major repairs. At the end of the 15th century the nave was completely demolished.

The reconstruction of the church came to a complete standstill at times due to several wars and uprisings in the following century. The building could only be completed in the period 1581–1612. The driving force behind this resurgence of the church was the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , who in the years after 1586 brought the formerly predominantly Protestant city back to Catholicism through a series of coercive measures through his rigid policy of recatholicization. The builder of the church was Jobst Pfaff from Würzburg .

1598 we took a increase before the tower. A pointed roof was put on (the so-called real tower ). In 1680 the two Iphöfer parishes St. Vitus and Hl. Blut were united. Further repairs to the building were made in 1701–1706. In the 20th century, the interior (1964/1965) and the church building (1970) were restored. Today the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation runs the church building under the number D-6-75-139-52.

architecture

The church presents itself as a three-aisled hall church . Tall round pillars with Tuscan-style capitals from the Renaissance hide the fact that it was actually built in late Gothic style . A single-nave choir is spanned by net and star vaults. The keystones in the central vault show different coats of arms. That of the Archbishop of Bamberg, Michael von Deinlein , that of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The coats of arms of the city of Iphofen and of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter follow.

Furnishing

Choir

Inside the church, the focus is first on the high altar in the heart of the choir. It was built in the late 17th century and has two floors. The picture below shows the martyrdom of St. Vitus, the namesake of the church. The figures of St. John and Valentine flank the altar.

On the side of the choir are the statues of St. Michael and Sebastian. The tabernacle complex , a work of early classicism , shows images of the Eucharist . On the left the ark and a table with showbread are shown. On the right you can see a jug and a protective pelican . The complex is crowned by another pelican.

In the choir, under a canopy in the north, there is a stone Madonna from 1420. In the background, wall paintings from the late Renaissance have been exposed. The consoles are made in the shape of musical angels . There are also two epitaphs in the choir room . Baron Franz Otto von und zu Franckenstein and Johann Moritz von Wenkheim are here.

window

The choir glazing is one of the other treasures of the church. They represent the legends of Saints Vitus and Sebaldus . On the north side of the choir: Vitus refuses to sacrifice to the gods and is therefore chastised and the miraculous healing . On the south side of the choir : angelic miracles and martyrdom .

The eastern windows show the story of Sebaldus. Bread miracles and wine miracles in the north and burial and finding of the sarcophagus in the south of the choir. Angel figures frame the pictures.

Nativity figurines

Since December 2011 there are some nativity figures of the baroque in the church . They were stored in a safe for years and come from the sculptor Caspar Fromm, who created them in 1768. Opposite are the three wise men by an unknown artist.

Further equipment

The two side altars were built in 1685. On the left, St. Remigius of Reims recommends Iphofen to protect the Most Holy Trinity. This painting is by the painter Johann Paul Codoman. It is framed by the figures of Saints Joseph and Francis . On the right, the baby Jesus sitting on her mother's lap hands over the rosary to St. Dominic. This altar is flanked by figures of the apostles Peter and Paul.

A baptistery inside the church is furnished with the epitaph of Jörg von Knotstat, which probably comes from Georg Riemenschneider . A statue of St. John the Baptist on the opposite side also comes from the Riemenschneider school. The figure of St. John the Evangelist by the master himself can be found in the south side chapel in Iphofen.

The miraculous image of the Birklingen monastery , a pietà from the 15th century, is on the altar table of the right side altar. In 1700 the figure was discovered in the destroyed monastery and brought to Iphofen. Another figure of Mary can be found on the steps to the choir. The "Beautiful Madonna of Iphofen" also dates from the middle of the 15th century. A Nuremberg workshop she created.

The stone pulpit of the church rests on a baluster pillar. It was created around 1600 (body, staircase) and 1780 ( sound cover ). In the pulpit niches are the figures of Johannes Baptist , Christ Salvator , Johannes Evangelist, Matthew and Luke. It is crowned by a choir of angels. Stations of the Cross from 1611 and the organ from 1751 (Johann Philipp Seuffert) complete the entire ensemble.

Outside

Above the southern side entrance there is a sculpture of Anna the third of herself . It was created in 1529. A mount of olives from the mid-15th century rises between the choir and sacristy . Remnants of the old painting can be seen. To the northeast of the church is a baroque crucifixion group.
