Mikhail Isaakovič Mukassei ( Russian Михаил Исаакович Мукасей , scientific transliteration Michail Isaakovič Mukasej ; born August 13, 1907 in Samostye , Belarus ; † August 19, 2008 ) was a Russian-Soviet spy with the code name Zephyr ( З ), the key information about Zephyr ( Зефир ) provided a possible attack by Japan on the Soviet Union in World War II .

Mukassei was trained at the Leningrad College of Oriental Studies and then at a secret service school of the General Staff. From 1939 to 1943 he worked in Los Angeles ( USA ). Based on his information during World War II, the Soviet Union knew that Japan would not attack the Soviet Union. This made it possible for Josef Stalin to move his troops from the east of the country to the west in order to support the fight against the German invasion.

After the Second World War, Mukassei was active in Western Europe and did not return to the Soviet Union until 1977. He then trained agents. Mukassei died in 2008 at the age of 101, his wife Jelisaweta (alias Elsa ) at the age of 97 in September 2009.
