Mikhail Ivanovich Budyko

Mikhail Ivanovich Budyko ( Russian Михаи́л Иванович Будыко ; born January 20, 1920 in Homel , Belarus ; † December 10, 2001 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian climatologist , geophysicist and geographer . He was considered one of the leading European climate researchers. Numerous models and predictions about global warming are based on his research. Most recently, he worked as head of the department for research into climate change at the State Hydrological Institute in Saint Petersburg.

Life

In 1942, Mikhail Budyko graduated from the physical department of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute and then did research at the main geophysical observatory in Leningrad. In 1951 he completed his studies there with a doctorate and was initially deputy director of the observatory, from 1954 to 1972 he was director of this research facility.

From 1972 to 1975 Budyko was head of the department for research into climate change at the Main Geophysical Observatory, since 1975 head of the department for research into climate change at the State Hydrological Institute in Leningrad (later Saint Petersburg).

In 1964 Budyko was admitted as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , in 1992 he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
