Michail Ossipowitsch Britnew ( Russian Михаи́л О́сипович Бри́тнев ; * 1822 in Kronstadt ; † 1889 ibid) was a Russian shipowner and shipbuilder .

Life

Britnew came from a family of merchants from Kronstadt and was an entrepreneur himself from 1840. So built z. B. several floating cranes for unloading ships. In 1862 he initiated a regular steamship service between Kronstadt and Oranienbaum . In order to be able to operate this liner service in winter as well, in 1864 he had the iron tugboat Pilot ("Пайлот") belonging to him converted into the first successful modern icebreaker . Although this led to keen interest in some countries bordering the Baltic Sea, there were initially no direct imitators. In 1871 he sold the pilot's construction drawings to Germany, which gave the impetus for the construction of such ships in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the USA and Canada.

In 1868 he was elected mayor of Kronstadt. In the same year he founded his shipyard in Kronstadt with his own foundry. Ships built there also sailed for a long time on the Siberian rivers Yenisei and Lena and on Lake Baikal .
