Mihail Hristov Popov , Bulgarian Михаил Христов Попов , German  Michail Christow Popoff (born September 21, 1899 in Pleven , † August 15, 1978 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian opera singer (bass).

Life

Popov first studied at the Sofia Conservatory and completed his musical studies in Naples . Initially, Popow worked as a concert singer. From 1920 to 1926 he was engaged as a choir singer in the opera choir of the Sofia National Opera. From 1922 he was trained at the Sofia Conservatory for a solo career. From 1926 he worked as a concert and opera singer in the bass range . From 1927 onwards he worked at the Sofia National Opera for almost forty years.

His main roles included the title role and the monk Pimen in Boris Godunow , Galitzky in Prince Igor , Gremin in Eugene Onegin and roles in Bulgarian operas. But he also sang bass parts of the Italian and German operatic fields. He also became internationally known through guest performances abroad (including in 1952 at various theaters in the GDR).

In 1964 he received a professorship at the National Conservatory in Sofia. Popow was awarded the Dimitrov Prize.

Popov's voice is documented by some pre- WWII HMV recordings . In addition, recordings appeared later with the Bulgarian brand Balkanton .
