Michel-Ange Marin (* 1697 in Marseille ; † 3. April 1767 in Avignon ) was a French Paulaner - Father , apologetic theologian and edifying writer. His moral novels were popular in his day.

Life

Marin came from an influential Provencal family. He went through the Paulaner novitiate in Aix-en-Provence and studied philosophy and theology in Avignon, where he also taught. At the same time he learned Hebrew and entered the controversy with the city's Jews . In 1745 he founded the contemplative community of the Sœurs de la Retraite . He was elected provincial of his order four times . In 1758, he refused to be elected General of the Order .

Marin wrote a poetic work in the Provencal language ( Les avantures de Barbakan, chien errant de la ville d'Avignon , 1722). His main theological work is Les Vies des Pères des déserts de l'Orient (1761–1764). Pope Clement XIII. honored him in three letters and commissioned him in 1765 to collect the martyrs' files . However, he became popular through his devotional novels, in which he tried to make theological and moral principles narrative vivid and to counter the criticism of religion with the Enlightenment . Several were translated into German, English, Italian, Spanish and Dutch and reprinted until the late 19th century.
