Toshihiko Kankawa

Toshihiko Kankawa ( Japanese 寒 川 敏 彦 , Kankawa Toshihiko ; * 1954 in Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician (organ) who also performed under the pseudonym "Blue Smith".

Toshihiko Kankawa had piano lessons at the age of three; at 18 he began to perform professionally; From 1978 to 1980 he appeared regularly on the TV show 11PM . He lived in the United States for a year, studying with Jimmy Smith in Los Angeles. In 1983 he presented his debut album Hobo's Blues , followed by Quarter Run (1984), with Jimmy Smith as a guest musician. In 1986 he performed under the pseudonym Blue Smith with Lou Donaldson at the first Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival Blue Note . In 1986 he toured with Buddy Tate and Arnett Cobb , and in the following years with Joe Henderson , Richard Tee and Cornell Dupree ; he also performed at numerous Japanese jazz festivals and in clubs. In 1987 Kankawa presented the album Mr. Soul Man with Nobuo Hara .

From 1989 Kankawa lived in New York City, where he played with his own band in Harlem ; he also played with Dennis Chambers and Phil Upchurch . In 1992 he was a guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival ; In 2004 he toured with Hiram Bullock . The discographer Tom Lord lists his participation in jazz between 1967 and 2011 at ten recording sessions.
