Lotito was nicknamed Monsieur Mangetout ( Mr. Omnivorous ). He is said to have started eating glass and metal in adolescence. He suffered from the rare eating disorder pica syndrome , although for unknown reasons he suffered no health problems . X-rays are said to have shown that his stomach could absorb up to 900 grams of metal a day. The artist performed worldwide with this extraordinary and, according to experts, unique ability.

From 1966 to 1997 he ate 18 bicycles, 15 supermarket carts, seven televisions, six candlesticks, two beds, a pair of skis, a Cessna 150 light aircraft , a computer and a coffin (with the handles). He is said to have consumed up to nine tons of metal in the course of his life. He chopped the objects up into bite-sized pieces with an electric saw , which he could then simply swallow. According to his own statement, the bicycle chain should have been the most delicious.
