Michelangelo Buonarroti (the younger) (born November 4, 1568 in Florence , † January 11, 1646 ibid) was an Italian poet and writer .

Michelangelo the Younger was a son of Leonard di Buonarroti Simoni and Cassandra di Donato di Vincenzio Ridolfi. Its famous namesake, the painter, sculptor, and poet of the High Renaissance, Michelangelo , was his great-uncle. In order to be distinguishable from him, he was nicknamed the younger .

He grew up in Florence and Pisa . In the latter city he met Galileo Galilei . As a young man he wrote verses that mimicked Petrarch 's style . Around 1600 he was appointed court poet under the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I de 'Medici .

Notable plays written by Michelangelo include Il Natal d'Ercole (1605, The Birth of Hercules ), Il Giudizio di Paride (1608, The Judgment of Paris ), La Tancia (1612) and La Fiera (1618). During a stay with the Tuscan aristocratic family of the da Filicaja, he wrote L'Ajone in 1623 , his verse rendering of the founding legend of this family. He arranged for the edition of his famous uncle's seals ( rime ) and dedicated them to Pope Urban VIII.

Michelangelo Buonarroti was a member of the Accademia Fiorentina and the Accademia della Crusca and actively worked on the first (1612) and second editions of the Vocabulario della Accademia della Crusca , the first Italian dictionary.
