Michelina De Cesare

Michelina De Cesare (also: Di Cesare ; * October 28, 1841 in Caspoli , Kingdom of the Two Sicilies ; † August 30, 1868 in Mignano Monte Lungo ) was a well-known Brigantessa and lover of the gang leader Francesco Guerra .

Life

De Cesare was born into a poor family in Caspoli, a district of Mignano Monte Lungo, and had a brother.

In 1861, Michelina De Cesare married a certain Rocco Zenga, who died the following year. In the same year she met Francesco Guerra, a deserted former soldier who had joined the gang of Rafaniello (alias Domenicangelo Cecchino) and who had been their leader since his death in 1861. According to the statements of the brigands Ercolino Rasti in 1863 and Domenico Compagnone in 1865, De Cesare and Guerra married secretly. The gang numbered 21 members, and Michelina De Cesare arguably played a leading role in it.

She was shot dead when Guerra's gang fell into the hands of Piedmontese hunters near Monte Morrone (Mignano) . Her body was put on public display as a deterrent.
