Microcebus manitatra is a primate species from the genus mouse lemurs within the group of lemurs . It occurs in a small coastal wet forest area near Tolagnaro in the Anosy region, on the south-east coast of Madagascar. It belongs to Microcebus murinus - species complex , the distribution area of Microcebus manitatra is that of the occurring at the Malagasy West Coast Gray mouse lemurs ( M. murinus ), however, the through the field of Malagasy mandrel forests, habitat gray brown mouse lemurs ( M. griseorufus ) separately. The description of the new species of mouse lemur appeared in April 2016. A little further to the east there is another species of mouse lemur, newly described in April 2016, Ganzhorn's mouse lemur ( M. Ganzhorni ).

features

Microcebus manitatra is one of the larger species of mouse lemur and reaches a total length of 27 to 28 centimeters, whereby the tail, which is densely covered with short hair, becomes 15 centimeters long. The hind feet are relatively short with 3.3 cm, the ears with 25 to 26 mm rather long. The back fur and the top of the tail of Microcebus manitatra are uniformly gray-brown. The peritoneum is gray-beige with a dark gray undercoat. Compared to the gray mouse lemur, Microcebus manitatra is somewhat smaller. The gray mouse lemur has a gray-brown back with a red-brown to cinnamon-colored central stripe and a beige to gray peritoneum. The holotype of Microcebus manitatra weighs 58 g. Its skull is 32.7 mm long, 20.3 mm wide (from cheekbone to cheekbone) and 15.4 mm high. The molars are 1.7 mm long.

Very little is known about the way of life of this newly discovered species. Like all mouse lemurs, it is likely to be nocturnal and mainly to be found in the trees. Mouse lemurs are generally omnivores that feed primarily on fruits and insects.
