Microsoft Defender (formerly Windows Defender Antivirus , also Windows Defender for short , previously Windows AntiSpyware ) is an antivirus program developed by Microsoft for its Windows to detect potentially unwanted software (mainly malware such as computer viruses and spyware ). The Windows Defender is under Windows 10 pre-installed and is available for Windows 8 and was - until the end of the respective support - earlier for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (or higher), Windows XP with Service Pack 2, therefore, from 2004, Windows Vista and Windows 7 available.

The software was originally developed as Windows AntiSpyware before it was further developed as Windows Defender and (later) merged with the Microsoft Security Essentials . In the current Windows 10 version 1909 , the settings of the program can be changed via the administration area named Windows Security .

history

On December 9, 2011, an offline version was presented that can start from optical data carriers or USB sticks . With the help of a wizard, it is possible to transfer the actual virus protection program to a medium such as a USB stick or a CD-ROM disk. The aim of the process is to remove malware that cannot be removed with the operating system running. The system will reboot and load into the recovery environment during the process .

With Windows 10 , Defender , referred to there as Windows Security, became an integral part of the operating system.

In April 2018 also one than was Windows Defender BrowserProtectionCenter ' called Chrome - Expansion published, which the user from phishing to protect pages.

Functions

The Microsoft Defender offers extensive functions of virus protection . Some of these features are for example:

Real-time protection

The " real-time protection " function checks files with which the user interacts before they are loaded and executed. For example, if a malicious file is downloaded, real-time protection can prevent it from running.

Automated threat definition updates

Current threat definitions are automatically delivered by default via Windows Update .

Monitored folder access

Folders that are specially protected can be selected via Microsoft Defender . In the event of an attack, this is intended to minimize data loss.

Safe start

The purpose of the safe start is to prevent rootkits from being loaded when the system starts.

Family options

The use of the PC can be monitored and limited in the family options. For example, individual usage times can be set and websites can be blocked.

reliability

Microsoft Defender was often referred to as insufficient virus protection. These claims were based on numerous tests in which it performed comparatively poorly. However, recent tests show that Microsoft Defender is a fully-fledged virus protection program under Windows 10. At AV-Test in June 2019, Microsoft Defender and three paid programs won the test. In a test of virus scanners for Windows 10 by Chip in cooperation with AV-Comparatives, Microsoft Defender came 14th out of 18; Criticisms included the high consumption of resources and the high number of false positives.
