The Microsoft Expression Design graphics program, which is part of the Microsoft Expression software family and is not available as a stand-alone product, is aimed at professional designers and developers. It is based on the vector program Expression from the software manufacturer Creature House , which was taken over by Microsoft in 2003, and was programmed using the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). The code name for Expression Design was Acrylic and was originally announced as Expression Graphic Designer before the current name was set in December 2006.

The graphics can not only be exported to the Adobe formats for Photoshop (. PSD ), Illustrator (.AI) and Acrobat (. PDF ), but also to XAML , which can be used in Microsoft Expression Blend or directly in WPF-based applications can.

In December 2012 Microsoft announced that it no longer wanted to develop the product and made version 4 available for download free of charge.

Availability

Expression Design first appeared on April 30, 2007. The current version 4 has been available in English as part of Expression Studio 4 since June 7, 2010, the German version appeared a short time later in July 2010. It is available for the Windows platform Windows XP available and requires the .NET Framework 4.0.

In September 2011 a new preliminary version was released under the name Expression Design September 2011 Preview , which among other things introduces SVG export.

Version 4 has been available as a free download since December 2012.
