Microthamnion forms richly branched, single-row threads with a diameter of 1.5 to 5 µm and rounded ends. The cylindrical cells have a nucleus and a wall-like, ribbon-shaped, olive-green chloroplast that does not contain any pyrenoids . The thread bandages are very small, not much more than 1 mm.

Reproduction

The asexual multiplication takes place by the formation of zweigeißeligen zoospores ; two per cell. Thread disintegration can also occur.

Sexual reproduction is unknown.

distribution

Microthamnion lives in phytoplankton of oligo- and mesotrophic lakes, also on stones, wood and aquatic plants in clean standing and flowing waters.
