The Middelsteburg (also called Redert's strong tower or Hohes Steinhaus ) was a high medieval castle in Groothusen , a district of the municipality of Krummhörn , in the Aurich district in Lower Saxony .

history

The chief Udo Tiadekana built the castle in the second half of the 14th century in the style of East Frisian stone houses . The building came into the possession of the Beninga through marriage at the beginning of the 15th century . The new lords of the castle were allied with Focko Ukena and fought at his side against the Hanseatic League . When the defeat of the alliance became apparent, they fled with Ukena to his castle in Groningen. In the course of a punitive expedition, the Hanseatic League conquered Middelsteburg in 1435 with the help of Edzard and Ulrich Cirksena and with the help of heavy artillery. The tower house was then rebuilt.

In the 16th century it came into the possession of the owners of the nearby Osterburg . In 1832 the Emden merchant and shipowner consul Ysaak Brons , who in 1848 was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly, bought the castle and had the Villa Brons built on the preserved basement, including the vaults of the old building. In 2005 the building burned down, but has since been restored.
