IBM System i 570 servers

Midrange computer (from the Engl., Mutatis mutandis central computer ) are a class of computers for use in science and industry, between the mainframes and personal computers are located.

history

In the 1960s, the minicomputer emerged as a new, compact computer class of medium-sized data technology for small to medium-sized organizations. The company Digital Equipment Corporation offered the PDP models, Hewlett-Packard , the HP 3000 models and IBM , the System / 3 .

With increasing miniaturization, these computers developed into computers of the same performance class, which are characterized by the use of powerful microprocessors . Examples are computers from Sun Microsystems or the AS / 400 series from IBM. Both such systems and (in retrospect) the minicomputers are counted among the midrange systems.

Since the 1990s, when the client-server model prevailed and midrange technology continued to adapt to modern personal computers and workstations, a midrange system is usually understood to be a powerful server system.
