Midtfyns Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Midtfyns Festival was a music festival in rings on the Danish island of Funen . The festival took place from 1976 to 2003 and for a long time was the second largest festival in Denmark after the Roskilde Festival and one of the largest in Northern Europe. Compared to the Roskilde Festival, a more traditional repertoire with established names was presented.

history

The founder of the festival was the Danish innkeeper Peter Færgemann (1947–1991), who initially let the festival take place in his restaurant Ryslinge Kro in Ryslinge (today in Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality ), where bands and musicians from the Funen folk scene performed. The event gained popularity and experienced its heyday in the 1980s, when it sometimes stretched over five days and over a hundred bands performed. When the American singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman headlined in 1989 , the festival was even bigger than the Roskilde Festival with 63,000 guests. After that, the number of visitors continued to decline, although the focus was on Danish greats and well-known international names. After Færgeman died in 1991 two days after the 16th edition, his widow Nina Færgemann took over the business. They could not prevent the economic decline and sold the event in 2001 to the sports club Odense BK , which sold the festival on for a symbolic amount after two years of losses. 2002 and 2003, some 20,000 spectators made their way to rings and in 2004 about 14,000 paying festival guests would have been necessary to break to achieve. But just a few weeks before the 28th edition, the new owner had to declare the Midtfyn Festival bankrupt. The former head of the rival Roskilde Festival, Leif Skov, explained the decline as follows: “The constant resale has made the festival run in all possible directions with its hype and various music. You can experience a lot of it in other places in the country. ”He missed the clear profile at the Midtfyns Festival.

Since the bankruptcy, local forces tried to revive the festival scene in rings and organized the ring festival in 2006 . With a mixture of well-known names and amateur bands as well as 1500 visitors, it was unable to build on the old successes of the Midtfyns Festival.
