Crater lake |
The Mien is a circular crater lake in Småland in southern Sweden in the province of Kronobergs län .
It is located about 12 kilometers southwest of Tingsryd and has a diameter of 5.5 kilometers. The lake lies within a crater that was formed by a meteorite impact about 121 million years ago. In the meantime the crater was filled with sediment. Only the erosion of the inland ice during the Ice Age exposed the crater again. It is believed that the original impact crater was larger than today's lake and was nine kilometers in diameter.
The asteroid (7706) Mien was named after the lake on March 20, 2000 .
The Mien drains over the Mieån into the Baltic Sea .
