Miguel Augusto Bombarda (born March 6, 1851 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , † October 3, 1910 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese psychiatrist and Republican politician.

Life

Miguel Bombarda studied at the Medical and Surgical School of Lisbon, where he was later appointed professor himself. He made an important contribution to the reform of medical studies. He was also director of the Hospital de Rilhafoles and set up a histological laboratory there in 1887 .

As a staunch Republican, he represented strictly anti-clerical positions. In 1909 he joined the Partido Republicano Português and was elected a member of parliament in August 1910. He was a member and thought leader of the revolutionary movement that brought about the end of the monarchy and the proclamation of the republic on October 5, 1910. Three days earlier, Bombarda was murdered by a mentally ill former patient.

In addition to a number of medical contributions, he was the founder of the journal Medicina contemporânea . In 1906 he took over the office of general secretary during the XVI. International Congress of Medicine and Surgery in Lisbon.
