Miguel Jacinto Meléndez (* 1679 in Oviedo ; † August 25, 1734 in Madrid ) was a Spanish baroque painter .

biography

Miguel Jacinto Meléndez was the son of Vicente Meléndez de Ribera and Francisca Díaz de Luxío; his brother Francisco Antonio Meléndez , three years his junior , also became a painter. The family moved to Madrid at a young age. It is possible that he received his training there from the painter José García Hidalgo . In 1704 he married María del Río; he had finished his apprenticeship and received his first orders from the area around the court. In 1712 he was appointed court painter to Philip V (r. 1700–1746) without pay ; it was the time of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) and the coffers were empty. In 1715 his wife died giving birth to a son, but the following year he married Alejandra García de Ocampo, who bore him two daughters. During the court's move to Seville (1729–1733) he stayed in Madrid, which of course did not help his future career, because during this time and afterwards he only received commissions from nobles from the wider area of the court. Nevertheless, he died debt-free in the summer of 1734.

The main part of his work are portraits of the royal family; but numerous courtly aristocratic portraits have also been preserved. He also dealt with religious topics from the life of Mary (Annunciation, Ascension, etc.). He seldom tried other topics - e.g. B. St. Raimundo Serrat at the Battle of Calatrava . In Spanish painting generally unknown themes such as landscapes , still lifes etc. were not part of his artistic repertoire.
