Mihkel Lepper

Mihkel Lepper (also Mihhail Lepper * February 29 . Jul / 13. March  1900 greg. In Warsaw , †  2. May 1980 in Stockholm ) was an Estonian silent film pioneer.

Life and film

Mihkel Lepper was born in Warsaw, which was part of the Russian Vistula at the time.

After the First World War Lepper worked for the brothers Konstantin and Theodor Märksa founded Estonian film company Estonia movie in Tallinn .

In the 1920s, he appeared as a star in popular silent films. He was seen in two early Estonian silent films in character roles: in 1924 he played Komtur Konrad von Eulenberg in the historical drama Mineviku varjud , and the title role in the exciting film Tšeka Komissar Miroštšenko from 1925. In 1924 Lepper was the editor in charge of the cinema magazine Film ja Ekraan ("Film and Screen"). After two issues in March and April, the magazine was discontinued.

In 1929 he made his only film as a director, the Estonian comedy Dollarid . The film is lost. In the same year he played in the Estonian historical drama Jüri Rumm . Konstantin Märska was responsible for the camera in both films. Meanwhile, Lepper earned his living at the largest Estonian bus company, the joint stock company OÜ Mootor, founded in 1926 .

With the resettlement of the Baltic Germans as part of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , Lepper moved to Germany in 1940. He worked as a front photographer in France. He also made educational films for what was then the State Film Office. After the Second World War , Lepper lived in Sweden. He worked as a freelance photographer in Stockholm. There he died of old age.

Mihkel Lepper is the grandfather of the Swedish film producers Hillar and Andi Loor .
