MikMod is free playback software for raster sequencer modules in numerous different formats. The backend functionality was encapsulated in a program library called libmikmod , which is integrated by a range of other software, including playback software such as Audacious and frameworks for developing computer games and the like such as Crystal Space , SDL or ClanLib .

features

Practically all major mod formats are supported. The supplied front end works with playlists and can also save them. MikMod can play compressed raster sequencer modules directly. It supports the data compression formats gzip , bzip2 , LHA / LZH , RAR , ZIP and zoo .

Availability

MikMod is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), the library under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). It has been ported to many software platforms including DOS , Unix-like , Windows , Mac OS , BeOS, and Java . MikMod can be installed directly from the standard package sources for all popular Linux distributions.

technology

MikMod is written in ANSI- C . A modular internal structure makes it easy to expand to include support for new formats. The character-oriented user interface of the front end is based on ncurses .

history

The project was initiated in 1992 by Jean-Paul Mikkers (MikMak) and initially only ran under MS-DOS . Although he disclosed the source code, he did not grant users the rights that are typical for free and open source software. In the meantime, he published under informal license conditions that are comparable to those of the BSD license and now, for example, grant users the essential right to use for any (including commercial) purpose. The last version by the original author appeared at the end of 1995.
