Michael Arthur Byers (born September 11, 1946 in Toronto , Ontario - † September 16, 2010 in Novato , California ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Philadelphia Flyers , Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabers in 1967-1972 played the National Hockey League .

Career

Mike Byers began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros , for which he played from 1963 to 1967 in the Ontario Hockey Association . In his last season with the Marlboros he won the Memorial Cup with his team . Then the attacker was committed by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , for which he was used ten times in the following season. He also played that year for Toronto's then farm teams , the Tulsa Oilers from the Central Hockey League and the Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League . After Byers began the 1968/69 season in Toronto, he was mainly used with the Tulsa Oilers in the CHL and finally given up on March 2, 1969 together with Bill Sutherland and Gerry Meehan in exchange for Brit Selby and Forbes Kennedy to the Philadelphia Flyers . By the end of the season, the Canadian played a total of nine times in the regular season or the playoffs for the Flyers, but the following season he spent exclusively with their farm team at that time, the Quebec Aces from the AHL.

In the summer of 1970 Byers was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings , for which he was active for the following year and a half. The 1971/72 season ended Byers with the Buffalo Sabers , where he ended his NHL career. Following this season he received a contract with the Los Angeles Sharks from the World Hockey Association , which gave him in February 1973 to their league rivals New England Whalers , with whom he won the prestigious Avco World Trophy at the end of the 1972/73 season . The Whalers, in turn, dissolved the attacker's contract after three years in February 1976, which allowed him to switch to the Cincinnati Stingers (also WHA). Byers ended his career as a player in the 1976/77 season with the Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League , for which he already played in his time with the Maple Leafs.

On September 16, 2010, Mike Byers died of cancer.
