Michael Horn (born July 16, 1966 in Johannesburg ) is a South African extreme athlete .

Life and accomplishments

He was the first to conquer the Amazon from source to mouth solo (1997) with a hydrospeed and a pirogue , circled the earth at the equator without motor aids (1999) and was single- handedly on the Arctic Circle ( Arktos Expedition , August 2002 to November 2004 ). From January to March 2006, that is, on the polar night, he carried out an expedition to the North Pole with Børge Ousland .

Mike Horn fought in a South African unit in Angola from 1984 to 1986 and has been a Swiss citizen since 1990. Today he lives in Château-d'Oex . A four kilometer long adventure trail has been set up there, the Mike Horn Family Trail , which includes a treasure hunt and an exhibition about Horn's expeditions. The course is no longer in operation.

Since 2008, Mike Horn has been with a young crew on the sailing yacht Pangea , the world's largest sailing expedition yacht with a length of 35 meters. The yacht was built in 2007/2008 to draw attention to the earth's environmental problems on a four-year global expedition .

He has been widowed since 2015.
