Mike Muuss

Michael John Muuss (born October 16, 1958 ; † November 20, 2000 ) was the author of the free network program Ping .

Until his death he was a scientist in the US Army in the science laboratory of Maryland and worked on geometry , ray tracing and computer networks. He wrote a number of programs and network programs, but most commonly associated with him is the 1000 line ping program (written in December 1983 at the Ballistics Research Lab).

Because of its usefulness, ping has been implemented in a great many operating systems, even though it was originally written for BSD .

In 1993, Muuss received an award for his life's work from the USENIX Association. In November 2000 he died in a car accident.
