Mike Pointon

Michael "Mike" Pointon (born April 25, 1941 in London ) is a British trombonist and singer of New Orleans jazz , who is also active as a jazz author.

Live and act

Pointon, who was initially trained in piano and trumpet , eventually switched to the trombone . After initially performing with the Blue Crow Jazzmen , he became a member of Perdido Street Six in 1958 . He founded his own band in 1959, was also active in the Salvation Army wind band and one of the founding members of Kid Martyn's Ragtime Band . He played in numerous bands, for example with Ken Colyer and Barry Martyn's Camelia Jazz Orchestra and accompanied Kid Martyn with Kid Thomas and Emmanuel Paul , and then in the mid-1960s with George Lewis , Alton Purnell and John Handy . He toured Belgium with the Cotton City Jazz Band and Mezz Mezzrow , where he led his own band and performed with Albert Nicholas ; he also went to the recording studio with Pol Closset's Dixieland Gamblers . He later worked with the Les Haricots Rouges . From 1974 to 1988 he was a member of Bill Brunskill's band, then Dick Laurie's Elastic Band and Hot Stuff . During the 1980s he made regular concert tours to the Gulf States as part of the British All Stars . In 1995 he toured Sweden and Germany with Bob Barnard and the Swedish Jazz Kings . In 2015 he was in Germany with his New Orleans Jazz Band . He can also be heard on albums by Sammy Rimington , Pat Hawes and the European Classic Jazz Band .

Pointon also writes for magazines such as Just Jazz, New Orleans Music, and Hot News, and presents music documentaries on radio and television. He has also written a biography of Ken Colyer and liner notes for numerous CDs .
