Miklós Fehér [ ˈmikloːʃ ˈfɛheːr ] (born July 20, 1979 in Tatabánya , † January 25, 2004 in Guimarães ; nickname Mikí ) was a Hungarian national football player .

Career

Fehér started his career at Rába ETO Győr . In 1998 he moved to FC Porto . He came to the Portuguese first division club Benfica Lisbon in 2002 via the stations SC Salgueiros and Sporting Braga . Fehér played his first game in the Hungarian national football team on October 10, 1998 in a 4-0 win over Azerbaijan in qualifying for the 2000 European Football Championship . Fehér scored seven goals in 15 appearances in the national team.

Sudden cardiac death

On January 25, 2004, the striker, who was substituted on in the 60th minute of the championship game Vitória Guimarães - Benfica Lisbon, suffered cardiac arrest as a result of a cold in front of the TV cameras . Benfica had taken a 1-0 lead just before the end of the game and Fehér wanted to buy time and saw referee Olegário Benquerença yellow card. He accepted it with a grin, turned and leaned forward. A moment later he fell backwards to the ground. He was resuscitated but died on the way to the hospital. There were shocking scenes of the players on the field. The newspaper Público wrote: "That was Benfica's saddest victory in the club's history". Association President Gilberto Madail said: "This is a black day for football in Portugal."

In the same season, Benfica won the Portuguese Cup and dedicated it to the late Fehér and the championship they won a year later. His shirt number 29 is no longer awarded at Benfica out of respect for Fehér.

At the funeral on January 28, 2004 in his hometown Győr in the cemetery "Szabadi úti Köztemetö" more than 1000 mourners were present. Among them was the then national coach of Hungary, Lothar Matthäus , and a 170-strong delegation from Benfica Lisbon. Hungary's Minister of Sport Ferenc Gyurcsány said: “Take care, Miklós! I have come to bid you farewell on behalf of Hungary, on behalf of millions of deeply affected people. "

According to the final report by the Portuguese judiciary , Fehér died of a heart attack .
