Nicholas III Dzierzgowski ( Polish Mikołaj Dzierzgowski ; † January 19, 1559 in Łowicz , Kingdom of Poland ) was Bishop of Kamieniec 1541–1542, Chełm 1542–1543, Włocławek 1543–1545 and Archbishop of Gnesen 1546–1559.

Life

Nikolaus came from a noble family. He studied at the University of Krakow and was mentioned as a royal notary in 1518. 1528 he studied in Bologna Law .

In 1541 Nicholas was ordained bishop of Kamieniec in Podolia, in 1542 as bishop of Chełm and in 1543 as bishop of Włocławek in Kuyavia. During this time he took action against reformatory efforts in his diocese, for example against the Danzig reformer Pankratius Klemme in 1544 .

In 1546 Nikolaus Dzierzgowski was ordained Archbishop of Gniezno and was thus also Primate of Poland. He advocated an anti-Habsburg Polish policy. Nikolaus also condemned the relationship between King Sigismund II. August and the noblewoman Barbara Radziwiłł , which was not justifiable under canon law , but finally married the two after the intervention of the Pope in 1550. In 1552 he consecrated the Lubusz Bishop Johann Horneburg , and in 1555 the Archbishop Felix von Lemberg .

Archbishop Nikolaus organized a meeting of the nobility and clergy in Warsaw around 1555 and chaired the Synod of Łowicz in 1556, which made important decisions against the Protestant heresy and the sacrifice of the host of the Jews in Sochaczew, in implementation of the decisions of the Council of Trent. Nicholas largely drafted the edict of January 13, 1557, which King Sigismund II. August issued against the Protestant currents in Poland.

On January 19 (February 22?) 1559 he died in Łowicz and is buried in Gnesen Cathedral .
